One might say it’s the reason for the season…

It’s that time of year again! It’s almost like clockwork – gears within wheels within circles – how this festive season recurs annually… the temperature dips, the snowflakes fly, the lights twinkle, the children’s cheeks are all aglow… the anticipation builds. What’s coming our way this December? Is it? Could it be? Yes it could! Look to the skies and sing along as we celebrate the Reason for the Season.

It’s the (H)appiest Christmas Ever!

It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And we’ve been threatening to memorialize it in song for some time now. That’s right, the two of us — one a lapsed Catholic, the other a secular Jew so non-observant there really wasn’t anything to lapse from — have been meaning to write a Christmas song for years. Well! We’d both finally completed our Masters’ courses, and about a week ago thought, “Oh… remember how we used to write songs?” So with a limited swath of free time, an impossibly tight deadline, and inspiration in the form of a marauding, mutating virus that’s ruining absolutely everything – challenge accepted!

(H)appy Christmas, one and all!

(Psst – downloads available at our Bandcamp page! )

Pedestal – it’s a long way down!

Written, recorded and videographed (?) in under two weeks, this is a “two week challenge” song. Owen chose the title, handed it to Andrea, who created lyrics for a verse and chorus, and handed them back to Owen (with a snippet of suggested melody), who took that to create the music and make a demo, around which the rest of the lyrics were crafted. We opted for a fairly low-key video this time. 🙂

Fill your nest – the Magpie is back already!

No sooner did we mention our first original song “Magpie” (see below) than we made a video to go with it!  🙂  There’s definitely a bird theme going on just now!

Enjoy!

One for sorrow… There’s a Magpie stealing shiny things

Magpie is an original song recorded last year for our in-progress album.  It’s also the first song we co-wrote!  We’re very pleased to post it on our new Bandcamp page: http://aeonwanderers.bandcamp.com where a small selection of originals are available to listen to.

81 Minutes – 28 years on from the biggest art heist in history

28 years ago, on 18th March 1990, the world’s largest art theft took place in Boston, MA. It took 81 minutes to extract $500M+ worth of art.  Since we were both unusually in the same place at the same time last week, we took our proximity to the location of the heist and its anniversary as a challenge to write a song featuring the titles of the lost artworks.

Recorded while away from our usual studio facilities, and filmed on location at the Isabella Gardner Museum, here’s our rapidly-created commemoration of the robbery. The museum retains the empty frames on display to this day, marking the losses, and in the hope of the works’ eventual return.

Lyrics:

Did you find what you were seeking?
Did you write your study for the programme?
Did you see reflections in a
portrait of the artist as a young man?

Mounted jockeys three are leaving
From the paddock
, breaking down the last fence.
Did you see them joining the procession
on a road near Florence
?

Eighty-one minutes, the concert will be free
Lost like an eagle in the storm upon the sea
Eighty-one minutes, men in blue are round the back
Coming to liberate a lady and gentleman in black.

Did you fall into the landscape
Where the needle
pointed to the sky?
Did the ghost of Isabella
Come and look you in the eye?

Did you eat your fill of doughnuts?
Did you drink a magnum of champagne?
Does your legacy in total
Just add up to thirteen empty frames?

Eighty-one minutes, the concert will be free
Lost like an eagle in the storm upon the sea
Eighty-one minutes, men in blue are round the back
Coming to liberate a lady and gentleman in black.

Observers are left contemplating
These spaces left silently waiting,
Hanging on elegant walls that were once picturesque.
Reminders of costly mistakes,
The errors that good men can make,
Are mocking you now from the chair sitting under your desk.

Eighty-one minutes, the concert will be free
Lost like an eagle in the storm upon the sea
Eighty-one minutes, men in blue are round the back
Coming to liberate a lady and gentleman in black.

(Bold elements refer to the titles of artworks – italics refer to elements of the heist or other historic events connected with the museum, such as the opening banquet.)

Dark Truth – a new original song!

Got stuck in a troublesome relationship?  Andrea has a few wise words for you.  🙂  Our second completed original takes the beltway around Motown on the road to discovery.

Mystery Man – our first completed original song!

While we started work on several originals during 2016 and 2017, the first to be completed was our entry for an Out Of Stock challenge in early 2017.  We were given a stock photo of a man emerging from a computer keyboard … and this is what it inspired!
